The village doctor

Northcote, James (1746-1831)

Northcote’s genre scenes often show some originality of approach. Their distant ancestors are Dutch seventeenth-century genre scenes especially the work of Nicolas Maes who often used a similar impasto for the highlights. Northcote always updated the setting into a vaguely defined rural scene.
