Rembrandt Harmensz. Van Rijn

Rembrandt Harmensz. Van Rijn (1606-1669) Jews in the Synagogue Etching, 1648, a fair but later impression Plate: 7.1 x 12.9 cm. ORIGINAL COPPER PLATE (The Schorr Collection Addendum 2022 page 39) Literature: Bartsch 126; cf. Hinterding 2008, no. 107; New Hollstein 242 The setting is the Netherlands of the seventeenth century where Spanish and Portuguese Jews began to settle in the 1590’s and then German and Polish Jews began to arrive in the 1620’s and 1640’s. Rembrandt lived on the Jewish Street, the Jodenbreestraat and creates this scene of Jews in various dress walking and discussing. Interestingly, the central seated figure bathed in light has his back to the viewer and remains isolated from the discussions
