Giovanni Balducci, called Cosci (1560-after 1630) The Battle of the Milvian Bridge Pen and brown ink wash over black chalk 15.4 x 36 cm Inscribed “Peria del Vagos” twice and numbered “9” along lower edge. A smaller drawing of the same subject but with considerable differences is in the Uffizi (inv. no. 646F). It is heightened with white but not squared, and its semi circular shape suggests that it was intended for a lunette. Both drawings show that Balducci was inspired by Giulio Romano’s fresco painted in the Sala di Constantino in the Vatican (Hartt, “Giulio Romano”, New York, 1981, pl. 58).
